Good bye

After two wonderful years I am very sad to be leaving Yakumo. I have learnt so much about Japanese culture and have found this to be a truly amazing country. The last two years have gone by too quickly but I am leaving with so many amazing memories.

The last two weeks have been particularly memorable. I took part in the Yakumo lantern festival for the first time. My friends and I helped play a huge drum and even though we didn’t always get it right we enjoyed trying.

My leaving party was a lot of fun. I made a speech in Japanese which two years ago I would never have thought possible.

Saying goodbye to the teachers and students has been sad as I have really enjoyed teaching English here. My time at school has always been fun and I will miss everyone.

I’m very grateful to the people of Yakumo for making my time here so enjoyable. I hope one day to be able to return again.

Cheerio, Laura

Cherry blossom and sumo

Last weekend I went to Matsumae and Fukushima. I wanted to see the cherry blossom in Matsumae. I thought the cherry blossom was beautiful. I also saw a shishi for the first time. To my surprise, I was invited up onto the stage to take part in the shishi dance. It was a lot of fun.

I then went to Fukushima to watch the women’s sumo tournament. I’ve loved sumo since watching a men’s sumo tournament in Tokyo last year. I was excited to watch sumo again, especially as my friend was competing in the Fukushima tournament.  Dori is an American ALT from Mori and this was her first time playing sumo.  Sixty women from all over Japan took part in the tournament. Although Dori was a little nervous to begin with she proved to be very strong and finished second. She really enjoyed the tournament and plans to return next year to compete again.

Golden Week travels

During Golden Week I travelled with my friend Joey to many places around Hokkaido, including: Okushiri, Otaru, Obihiro, Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo, Abashiri and Rausu. I thought the people of Okushiri were incredibly friendly. I saw the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets there too.

I thought Rausu was a lovely town and I saw a crane in Abashiri. Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo were both stunning and my favourite onsen was by the side of Lake Kussharo.

We had a wonderful week travelling around Hokkaido but Joey's favourite place was Yakumo’s Panorama Park!

Recently I ran English classes for 26 children aged from three to six years old. The children learnt lots of English words including colours, animals and numbers. Together we drew monsters, made rabbit masks and did lots of movement activities. I had lots of fun teaching the children.

A big thank you to Nishida san, Matsuo san, Fujiuchi san and all the parents who helped make the classes a success.

Congratulations to all the 3rd grade students who graduated yesterday. This has been a wonderful grade to teach. All the students, in every school, have worked really hard at English. Every class was interesting and the students have been incredibly friendly and so much fun! I’m truly going to miss them all. I hope their futures bring them happiness…and maybe a trip to an English speaking country, or two.

I taught a special activity class for the 1st and 2nd grade students at Kumaishi Daiichi JHS.  Students worked in teams to complete various physical activities. The teams worked really well together solving problems such as how to unknot a human knot. Well done to them all.

Winter in Hokkaido is different to winter in England. There is so much snow here! I love snow though, so really enjoyed the 'Snow Festival' organised by Nodaoi Junior High School. It included a snowball competition for the students and teachers. Everyone made and threw lots of snowballs, whilst trying to get a flag from the opposite team. It was exhausting but a lot of fun!

Christmas Party for Children

The 2011 Yakumo Christmas Party was held on a very snowy day in December. 23 children came along to play a number of games including: musical balls and cushions, a sweetie relay-race, pass the parcel and Santa’s bingo.

1

Pass the parcel was a big hit, everyone who opened a layer of wrapping paper found a little sweet or gift inside. Some were luckier than others but everyone enjoyed playing this traditional English game.

2 3

After 45 minutes of games we settled into craft activities where the children made lots of different Christmas decorations such as: fluffy Father Christmas faces, cotton wool ball snowmen and colourful Christmas tree cards.

4 5

Everyone coloured and glued happily, making some wonderful decorations and cards to take home. Thank you to everyone who came along to have some wintery fun and special thanks to all those who helped make it happen!

Recently, four students from Yakumo JHS and Nodaoi JHS took part in the annual Oshima English Speech Contest. All the students had practiced really hard before the contest. They all spoke skillfully, with great pronunciation and lots of confidence. Tomoka, a third grade student at Yakumo JHS, won the competition and will go onto the Hokkaido-wide competition later this month. Saki, a third grade student at Nodaoi JHS, was one of the ten runners up. Congratulations to them both, as well as Suzuka and Kento. I thought you all spoke beautifully!

Kumaishi Daiichi JHS held a special Halloween class for the second grade. The students were introduced to some traditional Halloween activities including: pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and a guessing game called ‘What’s in the box?’ Everyone had a lot of fun and I was impressed at the imaginative pumpkins carved by the class.

Recently, I completed a five week Adult English Class. I really enjoy teaching these classes as it's nice to meet different people from in and around Yakumo. The classes focused on four topics: giving a self-introduction, following directions, travelling and ordering in a restaurant. The classes run twice a year (winter and summer), please contact the Board of Education for more information.
